SESSION 1

Session 1: Honour

SUMMARY OF VIDEO CONTENT

Introduction to the Ten Cultures of Imagine Nations Church.

The difference between culture and vision.

Leadership teacher John Maxwell said: “Culture eats vision for lunch.”

Vision determines the destination. Culture is what gets you to your destination.

Vision: I have a dream. Culture: This is how we march. Joel 2:7: They do not break ranks. Vision is about “one day”. Culture: is about today -what we see right now.

Culture is modelled. Each of us are to be carriers of our culture.

A Culture of Honour

When you give honour, it says more about you and does more for you, than the person you give honour to.

Never seek honour from people - only from the Lord. 2 Cor 10:18: MSG

Example from the book of Esther: Hamaan and Mordecai, one wanted to selfishly receive honour and the other sought to give honour and to live honourably.

Honour versus flattery. Flattery has an agenda, honour’s motive is always pure.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit - at the very centre of the Trinity is honour. John 8:49,54, 16:13-14. Honour is a holy thing.

The Ten Commandments can be viewed as a culture of honour lived out. Honour God, honour one another.

Ro 12:9,10 Take delight in honouring each other.

1 Tim 5:17 Double honour for some.

DISCUSSION

Culture

1. Discuss the comments regarding culture, particularly culture within a church. Why is culture seemingly more powerful than vision?

2. What are some practical ways we can carry and protect the culture of our church?

Honour

1. Read 2 Cor 10:18, (Also in the Message paraphrase if you have it). Why does the human heart care so much about what other people think? What can we intentionally do to shift our desires towards the Lord?

2. Define flattery, then discuss the difference between words of honour and flattery? What might be the agenda of the person who often uses flattery?

3. Read aloud the verses listed in summary regarding the relationship the Trinity of God. Pause to consider how honour is at the centre of the holy, pure nature of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

4. Read Romans 12:9,10. We are called to “take delight” in giving honour. What are some ways you could do so this week?
