““The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.””
Luke 4:18-19 NKJV
Jesus came, not only with a message of hope, but also with mercy and justice. We seek to share the message of Jesus with everyone, everywhere but we don’t want to leave people in a situation of need or poverty. In some cases sharing the gospel with someone is too dangerous, but we will not be stopped from showing them the love of Christ through practical help and assistance.
Our work in mercy and justice are framed by several scriptures in Matthew 25:35-36 (“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’”) and James 1:27 (“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”).
Each year we seek to help those Jesus identifies so that we can show them the love of Christ through our actions and support. Through this book your will read stories where your support has helped to make a real and practical difference in peoples lives.
I WAS HUNGRY…
The UN reported in 2019 that world hunger is on the rise with 820 million people not having enough to eat every day. It is estimated that that figure will increase dramatically as a result of COVID this year so we are doing what we can to help feed the hungry and those living in desperate poverty. For many in developed nations being locked down due to COVID was an inconvenience but for those in developing nations it meant that they couldn’t work and therefore did not have the funds to buy food for their families.
I WAS THIRSTY…
According to Charity Water 785 million people live without access to clean water which equates to about 1 in 10 people. The majority live in isolated rural areas and spend hours every day walking to collect water for their family. Not only does walking for water keep children out of school or take up time that parents could be using to earn money, but the water often carries diseases that can make everyone sick.
Where we have the opportunity we are helping to provide clean water to homes and villages helping to bring a drastic change to their way of life.
I WAS A STRANGER…
Those who aren’t yet in the Kingdom of God could be considered strangers. Therefore we want to welcome those who are “strangers” to help them feel a part of the family of God. This is what we do when we plant churches, share the gospel and spread the love of Christ throughout the world.
I WAS NAKED…
The statistics on child sex trafficking and exploitation are horrendous. Over 1 million children are exploited by sex trafficking and according to a 2017 report from the International Labour Organisation “Child victims of commercial exploitation are particularly difficult to detect. The true figure is likely far higher than the current estimates.”
These children a vulnerable and exploited and our desire is to help them find dignity and hope for their future.
I WAS SICK…
According to a 2017 World Health Organisation report half the world lacks access to essential medical services. In many other cases if they do have access they do not have the means to fund their medical care.
Our desire is to care for the sick and help them receive the medical support they need.
I WAS IN PRISON…
In many nations once someone is imprisoned they are simply forgotten, considered lost to society. Add to that a high number of those people are wrongly imprisoned. By visiting the prisoners we are helping to show them that they are not forgotten and that God has a plan for them.
CARE FOR ORPHANS & WIDOWS…
In certain cultures once a woman is widowed she is deemed to have lost all her value to society and simply cast aside. She has no one to care for her or help her and she is often left caring for orphans who are left alone.
Our desire is to stand with these women and show them that not only do we care, but God cares for them.
Across the world too, so many children are sent away by their families because the burden is too great for them to be able to care for the child. Our desire is to keep families together and support them in their home so that they can remain as one.
