DISCIPLESHIP ESSENTIALS 1
SESSION 5
Session 5: Say God’s Word
Summary of Video Content
Jesus made it clear that to be His disciple will require a person to make certain life-choices that will be the opposite of ingrained habits. “If any of you wants to be my follower …” (Luke 9:23)
“Saying God’s Word “ is foundational for the Christian. It is a means of activating your faith by directing your heart to be in agreement with what God says in His Word. Romans 10:8-10, confession of faith in Christ = agreement (heart) with God’s promise of salvation to the one who believes and declares (spoken words) that Jesus is Lord.
We are accountable to the Lord for the words we speak. (Matt. 12:36-37)
Words are powerful and can be used to harm as well as to heal. (Pro. 12:18, Pro. 18:21)
Some people pride themselves in “speaking their mind”. Not everything you think or feel is right, good or helpful. Some things should never be said. Instead, we should seek to bless and minister grace. (Eph. 4:29)
There can be a real difference between what you feel in your emotions or see with your eyes AND with what you believe and know to be true based upon the word of God. This is why it is so important to say what God says about our situations.
Discussion
What are some ingrained, negative habits common to most people regarding the things we say? Have you sensed the Holy Spirit address any of these habits in your life?
Read James 3: 1- 4. What type of influence do our words have over our own lives and the lives of others? How could aligning your speech with God’s Word make a remarkably positive difference in your world?
Practice saying God’s Word, aligning yourself with what God says – not how you feel or even what you see, presently. Personalise the Scripture by inserting your name, or “I”, “me”,“my”, “our”, etc.
Example: 2 Tim 1:7 “For God has not given (your name) a spirit of fear, but He has given (me) a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.
