SESSION 5
Session 5: service
SUMMARY OF VIDEO CONTENT
The heart of a servant is a core value of IN Church. “If you’re too big to serve, you’re too small to lead.” Jesus is our example and modelled servant-hearted leadership before His disciples.
Luke 22:27 I am among you as one who serves
Luke 12:37 The King Who serves
John 13:22 Jesus led the way by washing His disciples’ feet.
Matt 20:25 Jesus came to serve and give His life for us.
Phil 2:5 Have the same attitude as Jesus who put aside his status
Service is our culture and our calling
Greatest words we could ever hear Matt 25:21 “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Ps Jack said, I am not a leader who serves, but a servant who leads.
Gal 5:13 - Called to freedom and from that position, to serve one another in love.
Psalm 110:3 Willing volunteers in the day of your power.
Of the 168 hours we each have, every week, we can choose to commit to helping and service. Your greatest ability is your availability. Every Sunday we need 100 volunteers to provide a service. Westcare is the same. There are opportunities all around you including in your connect group!
Time is on loan to each of us, not owned by any of us. Time is God’s gift to me and how I spend my time is my gift back to God.
2 Cor 5:15 He died for everyone so those who received this new life will live for
Rom 14:7 Not our own masters, we live to please the Lord in life and in death.
Rom 16:12 Phoebe - servant of the church
Col 3:24 For you serve the Lord Christ
DISCUSSION
Jesus was considered a rabbi, loved by the masses of people who followed him but criticized by the religious establishment who felt they needed to keep a close watch on him. His words and his behavior were not what they believed a rabbi should say or do. Jesus abolished the old and led the way towards a new type of leader: the servant-leader.
From the Scripture references supplied and/or others that come to mind, discuss some of the times Jesus clearly demonstrated that he had come to serve and give his life. What stands out to you?
2. Phil 2:5 begins with “Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus…” This statement helps us understand that having a servant heart is a mindset and a choice.
What types of positive changes can come to our lives when we make this shift in attitude? Changes in relationships - family, friends, church family? Attitude at work or other situations? Home life and many more?
3. Discuss these statements from Ps Jack:
“Time is on loan to each of us, not owned by any of us. Time is God’s gift to me and how I spend my time is my gift back to God.”
How could “gifting your time to God” affect your use of time?
4. Have you already discovered a place of service at Imagine Nations Church or Westcare?
Is there an area of church life or connect group you feel you could “gift” some of your time to?
