SESSION 4

Session 4: loyalty

SUMMARY OF VIDEO CONTENT

Many things can be taught but loyalty is a personal character issue. It’s something we all admire.  It’s beautiful because it combines love, humility, commitment, service and selflessness - all powerful characteristics of Christ.

Examples in Scripture.

Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1) Ruth clung to her: “Where you go, I will go …”You don’t really know if you are loyal until the test of adversity. You may just be in agreement as long as things are agreeable to you. You can use adversity to demonstrate your loyalty to someone as Ruth did. God honours loyalty. Matthew 1, Ruth the Moabite is in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Joshua was loyal to Moses. Aaron and Hur also, who held up Moses’ arms while Joshua led the battle in the valley below. Rather than being critical of Moses’ human weakness, they lifted his arms and stood with him in his time of need. Ex 17:10-12

Elisha poured water over the hands of Elijah. 2 Kings 2, 3  His loyalty and service were rewarded with a double portion of the Spirit’s anointing. Sowing loyalty or disloyalty - Biblical principal, you will reap what you sow.

Elisha’s servant Gehazi - in spite of all he saw and experienced, was not loyal. He coveted the fine garments and silver offered by Naaman in gratitude to Elisha. He ran after Naaman’s company of men and requested these things, then lied about it all to Elisha. Gehazi did not receive a double or a quadruple anointing which he may have been in line for, but instead, he finished life as a leper. 2 Kings 5

DISCUSSION

  1.  Loyalty is something we all admire. We love stories, movies and demonstrations of loyalty as it is a beautiful thing. How can we personally develop the character quality of loyalty?

  2.   How does adversity provide the opportunity to demonstrate loyalty to another? Can you think of an example? Is there someone in your life, presently that you could demonstrate loyalty to as they experience adversity? (See Pro 18:24)

  3. Discuss this statement: “You may just be in agreement as long as things are agreeable to you.

  4. Choose one of the examples of loyalty or disloyalty provided to us in Scripture and discuss the actions, thoughts and outcome of this example.

  5. What are your priority people and places that you should demonstrate your loyalty? Your love, humility, commitment, service and selflessness.
