DISCIPLESHIP ESSENTIALS 1

SESSION 2

Session 2: Submit your life (Surrender)

Summary of video content

  • Many start out, but not everyone finishes well. Some have deliberately violated their consciences, resulting in “shipwrecked faith” (1 Tim. 1:19-20).

  • Submit your life to God means total surrender to God and His will. “Sub - mission” = come under the mission. “Not my will but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:41, John 4:34)

  • The opposite of submission is rebellion and independent spirit, Lucifer. (Isaiah 14:12-15). “I will” vs “Thy will”.

  • Submission is the conscious yielding of my life to God and His will. It is essentially having the same mind-set as Jesus Christ. (Phil. 2:5-9)

  • Submission to God causes the devil to flee. (James 4:7). To the extent that I am one under authority I also walk in authority. (Matt. 8:5-10)

  • Submission to God extends to my willingness to submit to the godly leaders He has placed over my life.

  • Under authority I am blessed with protection, correction and direction.

Discussion

  1. Revisit Phil. 2:5-9. Describe the descending stages of humility Christ demonstrated when He submitted Himself to the will of His Father. How can we adopt this mindset? How is this lived out in our everyday life?

  2. What is spiritual authority and why is it essential for the Christian? List some Bible verses that come to mind and the benefits of increased spiritual authority.

  3. Why is it sometimes a challenge to yield to God or submit to godly leadership? What internal processes are involved in this?

  4. Why do we need spiritual covering and protection? What are the risks of not being “under cover”?

  5. No one is above correction. Read Jeremiah’s description of the potter forming the clay. (Jer. 18:1-6) Why is correction an essential part of spiritual formation?

  6. Ps Jack said: “God has guarded my life a thousand times as I have submitted to godly leadership and the will of God.” In what instances would it be appropriate to seek the guidance of godly leadership? If you have an example, please share.
