DISCIPLESHIP ESSENTIALS 1
SESSION 1
Session 1: Introduction to Discipleship
Summary of video content
Discipleship is the move beyond simple faith in Christ, into becoming a committed follower of Christ.
Jesus’ death upon the cross and His resurrection are essential to our faith; likewise, the cross and Christ’s resurrection are central to following Him. (Luke 9:23-24)
Vision statement of Imagine Nations Church: “We exist to turn non-Christians into totally committed followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
We want to do more than “get to heaven” - we want to get there well and as Paul has said: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim 4:7)
Some do not finish well and fall away for a variety of reasons. Some years ago, Ps Jack and Carol asked themselves: “Why are we still standing? What foundational principles have been important for us?” Answering the question, they developed the Seven Pillars of Discipleship, principles that you can build your life upon.
#1 Submit your life (Surrender)
#2 Seek God passionately (Personally)
#3 Show Christ’s Character (Act like Jesus)
#4 Say God’s Word (Confession)
#5 Share Your Faith (Evangelism)
#6 Serve God’s Dream (The Church)
#7 Sow Bountifully (Generosity)
Discussion
We are all at different stages of growth. From where you are at right now, what does being a committed follower of Jesus Christ look like to you?
What do you sense is your next step as a follower of Christ? Can you see the step beyond this?
From the video content and from your own observations, what are some of the reasons people fall away and stop following the Lord? What measures could a person put in place to prevent these from happening?
Read Romans 5:3-5. Use a variety of translations to discover the full meaning of this passage. Discuss the progression of Christian maturity and why each step is important. Which step is most relevant to you right now?
